Who Collects Decorative Plates?

When I think of collector’s plates it always reminds me of visiting my grandmother’s house when I was a child.  She had an entire wall covered with collectible plates which she had been saving for years.  I remember watching her as she carefully took down each individual plate and dusted it, then gently put it back into its place.  What amazed me was that she had a story to share with each plate she took down.  She could tell me exactly where the plate came from, when she purchased it, and why it was special to her.  I didn’t quite understand it all back then, but looking back, I can see that they were her way of connecting with her past.

Collecting decorative plates is still a popular means for people to decorate their homes and show off their interests at the same time.  Decorative collector’s plates can be found in a wide variety of designs and themes.  The style of plate collected is a very individual choice.

Some people choose to collect one certain brand of collectors plate such as Bradford Exchange, which is a very well known brand.  Others, preferred to go with an overall theme which interests them.  The topics can be very specific.  There are people who collect only Gone with the Wind plates.  And there are people who collect plates exclusively commemorating the works of well known artists.  Norman Rockwell plates for example, are very popular.  Music lovers often search out Elvis Presley plates and pay substantial amounts for complete collections showing off “The King”.  Some people even collect plates which depict famous scenes from television shows like Star Trek.

The value of collector’s plates can vary widely.  It can be affected by the scarcity of the plates, how many actual plates were produced, and how much demand there is for each plate.  If you are thinking about starting a collection of your own, you can get a jump start by visiting sites like eBay which make it possible for you to purchase entire collections, all at once, at reasonable prices.
