Vintage door knobs are a great addition to any home. They come in so many different shapes, sizes, and colors it’s easy to find the one that is perfect for your house. Like ceramic door knobs, these are classic styles that have never fallen from vogue since they were first made. It’s also hard to find the quality and craftsmanship in new door knobs that was available when these were originally made. For the sake of this article, I’m considering vintage anything that was made pre-1970.
The first step to finding good prices on vintage door knobs is to decide whether or not you want all of the door knobs in your home to match. There has been a common misconception that all of your door handles should be the same, but they don’t. That’s like making a rule that every room behind the door knob should look the same! If you can settle with different knobs on each door you can really save a ton of cash because you can pick up one-offs from the antique store for dirt cheap.
While on the topic of the antique store, these places are very hit or miss. You’ll find similar looking knobs for very different prices from one antique store to the next. I think this is because there isn’t a price guide for door knobs, so opinion of it factors into the price. Be sure to shop lots of different stores to see what they have, you’re going to find lots of options.
Another place to find deals on vintage knobs is online. You can shop places like eBay, where you’ll have a gigantic selection to choose from, but very expensive shipping options. Instead, I recommend shopping from online stores that specialize in door knobs. These are usually much bigger companies that will offer shipping deals with orders of a certain size. This will save you an incredible amount of money because door knobs are way heavier than they look and cost a small fortune to ship.
Vintage door knobs are perfect in just about any home. Use these simple tips to save as much money as possible when adding them to your home.
