When going through a bathroom remodel, you are likely to be trying to balance the function of the bathroom with the style theme you are trying to reflect. The good news for you is that there are many hundreds of vanities to choose from, so no matter what decor you go with you are sure to find the vanity that is right for you.
Before you can know what vanity is right for you, you have to analyze your storage needs and those of your family, then try to figure out the best way to work in your style. As far as the storage goes, most vanity storage is under the sink, so that is the need you have to think about. Some vanities are basically wide open boxes beneath the sink. This is good storage for towels, toiletries, and any other small items that find their way into the bathroom and need to be kept out of place. Other vanities have a bottom section that is open air with a couple of shelves. This is also a good way to store towels or perhaps bedding, but not so good for those other items we mentioned. So, your first decision is to know how much and which type of under vanity storage you need.
Once you know what you need under the vanity, you have to think about what you need up top, or in other words how much counter space you need. One thing that determines the amount of counter space is the size of the sink. Like anything else there are trade offs. If you opt for a larger sink, there will be less counter space. Likewise, a smaller sink equals more counter space.
If you are dealing with a master bathroom, you are likely looking for a large vanity that can accommodate double sinks. If so, you will get more storage beneath the sinks, and possibly more counter space.
Once you know the functional aspects of the vanity, you have narrowed your selection down quite a bit. You can now take your vision for the style and decor of the room and apply that when searching for bathroom vanities. If you keep to your plan and take a systematic approach, you will take the stress out and may actually have fun in the process!
