Travertine is a very versatile stone when it comes to applications both inside and outside the home; if you don’t know about this useful building and decoration material then you are really missing out. In the home travertine is used for everything from entryway floors to complete bathrooms and shower stall coverings. Generally the stone is found in a variety of earth tones because it is a sedimentary rock which is formed at the bottom of hot spring pools over millions of years, the mineral content gives these tiles and pavers their unique appearance. Travertine paver tiles work very well as a garden pathway because they are sturdy and the hues available look very natural. Many people surround the pavers with a crushed stone of a complementary color but I like small round river rock which can be found at your local landscape supply company.

When setting Travertine pavers in a walk way it is very important to start with a good base material. In areas where there is a lot of rain and snow it is well worth your time to apply a base of gravel. First, mark your path and excavate down about 5” below the surface of final paver level. Clean all loose dirt and vegetable matter out of this area. Then compact the area. A post with a square of plywood on the end works very well.

Once the area is prepared start with a few inches of gravel for drainage and pack this is with your tamper as well. Next, spread out sand about ¾” thick and completely level. Install one side of your boarder and then lay the pavers out keeping them as close together as you desire. Once the pavers are laid you can install the second boarder.

The last step is to apply the material which will go in between. If you have close fitting travertine then you will want to spread sand over the surface and broom it back and forth so it will fill the cracks. If you have the pavers set inches apart then you should not use sand but instead some other stone as I mentioned before.

For a long lasting path you can also set the travertine pavers in concrete .

Travertine tile is a mixture of marble and limestone and is a quarried stone. There are different types of travertine tile available in multiple colors and shapes. Being a natural stone, travertine can resist harsh weather conditions and inclemency. This is another reason for the popularity of travertine tiles.

Another interesting fact is that different types of travertine tile are available in the market yet no two pieces look alike. This adds to the beauty of travertine tiles. These can be used for flooring or as bathroom tiles. Among different types of travertine tiles, the tumbled travertine tile has a rough exterior and unsmooth finish. Hence, travertine floor tiles for the living room gives a look of antiquity to the house.

Different types of travertine tile finishes can be found online or at any tile supplies store. These varieties include honed or filled variety, tumbled travertine, semi-polished brushed travertine tiles, chipped travertine tile and the polished variant. Hence, before deciding to buy a travertine tile, determine which variety would be the best for your home.

Natural travertine contains several cracks and blemishes. When these holes are filled and made to a smoother finish, it is known as filled travertine. These can be used to decorate the living area for shining flooring. The tumbled variety in travertine tiles has rough finish and is ideal for a bathroom or kitchen flooring.

The brushed travertine tiles have rough and semi-polished finish. Chipped edged travertine tiles also tend to have a pitted exterior. Being chiseled on all sides, this travertine variety has a rustic feel to it. Finally, the polished travertine has a glossy shiny finish. It serves well as walling and floor tiles for patios or the living rooms.

Depending on the budget, one can choose among the different types of travertine tiles for their homes. Always order 10% more tiles to avoid shortage during construction. Benefits of different types of travertine tile include their strong and long lasting nature. This makes it feasible to have travertine bathroom tiles and floor tiles that are very durable and have elegance. Combining light colored travertine tiles with ceramic decorations helps to create an Italian kitchen style with ease.

Owing to its porous texture, travertine tile should be protectively covered using a sealant before being used in constructions and renovations. With increasing demand on different types of travertine tile, its prices are coming down. Cleaning travertine tile is as easy as caring for it. This makes travertine an attractive and affordable flooring alternative in contemporary home building projects.
