Most gardeners who know a thing or two about garden lights would celebrate your decision. But what if you’re a little shy about using electricity? What if you want something that’s perhaps a little friendlier towards the natural environment?

You’ve got your solar panels that collect light energy as it radiates out from the sun, converting it into electricity to be stored in batteries. The solar garden light spends its days collecting energy from the sun, converting it to usable power, then expends that energy all night, laying an expressive illuminating glow on everything from rose bushes to dwarf apple trees to lilacs.

Don’t worry that once you’ve chosen solar lighting for your garden that you’ve suddenly deprived yourself of choice. Green garden lighting has become very popular over the past few years and the market expansion reflects that.

So you’re going to hook up to ground stake lighting, which are small lights set right against the earth. They’re ideal for lighting up paths or plant beds. You’ll find hanging solar lights- pedestals for solar lanterns that radiate across the whole garden. There are even spotlights that can show off a particular garden favorite such as a tall tree, sculpted shrub or some garden statues. There are even colored lights of all sizes that allow you to go for a flashy night time appearance.

In many ways, solar powered garden lights are much lower in terms of maintenance than a garden that uses traditional lights. For example, you don’t have to install wiring. You don’t have to remember to throw switches on or off. There’s very little in the line of needing to pay attention. Indeed, solar powered garden lights are kind of like the plants themselves. Once you’ve got them in place, with a minimal amount of attention they’ll do their thing. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the show!

I’ve been thinking about a number of home improvements for around the outside.  The first one I’ve been considering is a trampoline for my kids.  I have to say that it seems to be a good idea (other than possible emergency room visits).   My kids would love it, but I think even more importantly the neighbor kids would love it too, which means I can keep an eye on what is  going on.

Also, I’ve been considering putting up a garden shed.  Like many people I want to grow some of my own veggies this year and I think it is time to give my gardening stuff a new home.  So the question is do I use garden shed plans or do I go with one of the pre-built Rubber Maid kinds?  I am still not sure.  I know that I like the way the wood ones look better though, so I am leaning that direction.

Finally, I’ve been thinking about sprucing up my flower garden with garden statues.  I’ve been looking around and I have been thinking that I might order a foo dog or a funky gargoyle.  I suppose my tastes run toward the strange, because it seems to me that many people would rather have cats or kids, but I like to stand out.

If I do manage to get all of these things done this season it will be nothing short of a miracle.  I am fairly busy raising kids, going to girl scout meeting and writing.  But I think these three things are manageable and they will make my outdoor garden space nicer than ever.
