Mottling: This is a patched look where one color takes on a darker hue in certain spots and a lighter in others. Mottling can be very aesthetically pleasing and is one of the easier special effects you can achieve. Simply put down a lot of stain with a sprayer and it will naturally pool in the subtle irregularities of the concrete. A richer, darker hue will appear in certain areas.

Faux-finishing: An antique appearance is one of the more subtle affects that is beautiful in any color. This concrete acid stain style is made by dappling the floor in a random pattern with different colors of enhancers. The enhancers blend and fade the colors together creating a soft but varied texture.

Extreme-gloss: The acid in the stain can eat away at the concrete, making the surface less than even; however, this technique will make sure the floor retains its smoothness for a high gloss finish. Dilute the acid with water so that it is not as abrasive and then move it around with a microfiber mop to keep it from pooling. The result is a flat consistent color with a noticeable sheen.

Layered: To create a surface with a variety of color, one needs to employ the layering technique. By repeatedly dousing the area in different shades, an organic variation develops as the colors blend over the surface. This concrete acid stain effect is great for imitating natural stone because it duplicates the variety of tones and hues.

Variegated: For those that want to imitate a marble floor, variegation is the way to manufacture lighter and darker veins. After acid staining the floor in one color, vein shaped stencils are cut out and laid on the concrete. After highlighting or shading the surface, an additional coat of stain may be added to complete the natural look. This special effect is so authentic that it can be difficult to tell the difference from real marble!
