Split Air Conditioner Facts

A split air conditioner is basically an air system that consists of two parts. One part is the inside unit which is the furnace or an air handler. The second part is the outside unit which is referred to as the condenser. The two parts are connected by two pipes and a control wire that sends signals to both units. The two pipes are made of copper, one is larger than the other in diameter, and they carry various phases of refrigerant.

The split air conditioner’s larger copper pipe is referred to as the suction line. Using a compressor, the refrigerant in the suction line is sucked into the condensing unit – hence it’s name. The refrigerant is a vapor form that is pulled into the compressor in the condensing unit where it’s compressed and turned back into a liquid refrigerant. The compressed refrigerant goes through a condensing coil and is dispersed by a fan. This fan pushes cooler air through the hot coil and thus hot air comes from the outside of the air conditioner when it’s on.

The small line in the split air conditioner is referred to as the liquid line or the low pressure line. Compressed refrigerant runs its course through the condensing unit and then enters the liquid line. It then travels to an evaporator coil and from the air that’s being pushed through by the blower, it picks up heat. The heat is then dissipated and cold hair is discharged out of the unit and eventually through ducts and out of vents. Then the entire cycle repeats itself.

The purchasing of a split air conditioner is an important one and requires much thought so that the right unit can be found.  Some points to consider are size and noise production. To figure out what size split air conditioner is needed, measure the room it will occupy and check manufacturer’s suggestions for the right size unit needed to handle the air in the space.  Also, for noise reduction, check for quiet labels that assure the unit is as quiet as possible and keep in mind that neighbors in close proximity may be effected by the outside noise of your unit as well.

Many online retailers have the best selection and price options on split air conditioner units and may even offer free or discounted shipping rates as well so check the Internet before purchasing your unit elsewhere.
