Safety Issues With Recessed Can Lights

Recessed can lights are a great way to light up a room, but they have some serious safety issues when they aren’t properly installed. The good news is that doing it properly is not hard to do, and can be done by just about anyone who knows how to read! Many homes have improperly installed recessed can light fixtures, and they may not even know it. This post will show you what to look for in a recessed can light so you can keep your home and family safe.

The problem with this style of light is that they get extremely hot and can start fires in your attic. An attic fire will cause an incredible amount of damage because it will spread extremely fast and burn the roof down. Most homes are not able to be repaired after a serious attic fire! Do this job correctly to make sure that this doesn’t happen to your home.

In order to prevent fire you have to match the correct rating of light with the type of insulation that your home uses. Loose pack insulation is extremely flammable, and hard to contain in your attic. For this reason, IC rated lights were designed. They do not get as hot as non IC rated lights do and can be used around loose pack insulation. If you don’t have any insulation in your attic you can use whatever type of can lights you want.

For installation in lower levels of multi-story homes, in basements, and most commercial situations, non IC rated lights should never be used. These lights get hot enough to light wood on fire, so don’t use them in these circumstances!

When the right type of recessed can light is chosen and installed properly, the risk of fire is almost zero. Have the help of an experienced salesperson to answer your questions and make sure that you’re getting something that is safe for your home. Protecting your family and property should take priority in any addition to your home.
