Choosing a Pole Hedge Trimmer.

With a Pole Hedge Trimmer, the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ does actually ring true.  A cheaper model may be lighter in weight but it may not be properly balanced.  The result of this will be more strain on your back and upper body as the tool will be so much more difficult to use.

Remember those pictures of Mediaeval Knights with huge swords?  The reason they could swing them to fight is that the position where they held the handle made the blade perfectly balanced and this is the result you are looking for with your pole hedge trimmer – think of yourself as a Knight in armour going to do battle with your hedge!

So, when you go to the store to choose your pole hedge trimmer, don’t leave it lying on the counter whilst you admire it and its attachments, pick it up, swing it around as you would do when cutting your hedge.  You may get a few funny looks, but what you won’t get, is the wrong tool for the job.

Before you part with your hard-earned cash, you want to feel confident that your new hedge trimmer feels right, that it feels balanced and like the sort of tool that you could use for an hour or so at a time without strain.

If you have any concerns about a petrol hedge trimmer with regard to exhaust fumes, you should be able to reassure yourself about this, the first time you pick one up.  Note where the engine is in relation to where your face will be when you are using the machine and you will see that the fumes will be carried safely away so you need have no worries about carbon monoxide and other noxious gases.  A petrol model does have advantages over a cordless one, not least because it will be a great deal more powerful.

All in all, you will find using your Pole Hedge Trimmer much easier than the old method of climbing a ladder with your hedge trimmer.  Safety is paramount, you do need to make sure however that if you choose a petrol one, you will need ear defenders in addition to the eye protection that is an absolute ‘must’ when hedge-cutting.
