Plan Your Garden Pond To Keep It Healthy and Clean

A garden pond can be one of the most attractive, relaxing features of your yard.  If you are thinking of building a garden pond for your yard, there are several things that you need to consider in order to make sure that you have a healthy, thriving pond for many years to come.

First, you need to carefully plan the location for your new home garden pond.  When choosing a spot, it is a good idea to put it in a spot that gets a lot of sunlight during the whole year.  Aquatic plants need a lot of sunlight, and will help keep your pond supplied with oxygen to keep it healthy.  If you have trees in your yard, try to put it away from the trees.  Leaves that fall into the pond begin to decay and take oxygen out of the pond, which can cause fish to die and odors to come from your pond.

Larger ponds can be somewhat easier to maintain because there can be more plants that will keep the water in a natural balance. Thirty-two square feet is just about the smallest size you should build your pond. It only needs to be 18 to 24 inches deep unless Koi carp are part of your design; if you are planning a koi pond, it should be thirty inches deep or more.

Using a flexible pond liner to create your design is a good idea. However, it needs to be kept a simple shape because complex turns and curves will cause unsightly folds and will make it hard to keep the water circulating properly.

If you want to make sure that your pond stays clear and healthy, you should consider using a pump and filter.  Pumps will ensure that the water is circulated, and a filter will screen out suspended particles that dirty your pond.  Good luck with your garden pond!
