Achieve a Vintage Look with Outdoor Gooseneck Lighting

If your home décor is a country or vintage look, outdoor gooseneck lighting can add just the right touch. Gooseneck lights, also known as barn lights, can be used to illuminate certain features on a home, entryway, pathway and anything you want to light up. This style of light fixture was most commonly used around the turn of the 20th century but now is used both indoors and outdoors in almost every type of décor.

Because outdoor gooseneck lights are available in a variety of sizes, colors and styles they work well with most architectural styles and decorating themes. You can find brightly colored lights with scrollwork and fancy shades or very basic, vintage designs that look like they’ve been pulled right out of the early 1900s.

One of the benefits of this type of light is that the beam can be as focused or as dispersed as you choose. Depending on the size and the design of the shade, you can have a focused circle of light or you can light an entire large area with a wide shade and a large bulb. A home with this type of light fixture outside can add one or two on the indoor entryway walls to continue the theme and make the whole area feel more pulled together. And of course, homes with barns can use these outdoor lights to give the area a truly vintage, country look. For a more vintage look, stick with flat metals to give the look of dull copper or brass and choose shades with ordinary bell-like shapes.

If you like the style of outdoor gooseneck lighting but don’t have a vintage or country theme, look for manufacturers that produce contemporary designs. Many don’t even have a gooseneck arm but rather a straight arm coming out from the wall. Shiny finishes and modern shapes mark the more contemporary styles created today.
