Things to Consider When Building Your Mini Greenhouse

Setting up a mini greenhouse is the perfect way to efficiently utilize your available space while providing your plants with an ideal growing environment. Greenhouses can be used to extend the growing season or to provide optimum conditions during the longest days of the year, providing protection from pests and diseases. When it comes down to selecting a greenhouse, the decision really comes down to whether or not you want to purchase a kit or construct a house of your own. Before making a firm decision one way or the other, it’s important to carefully consider both options, listing the pros and cons of each. By spending the right amount of time in the research phase of your purchase, you will be more likely to enjoy the completed project.

There is one thing you should ask yourself if you’re even considering building your own greenhouse – do I have the skills that are necessary to take a set of plans and see them through? If building plans even slightly give you feelings of anxiety, you should probably consider buying a greenhouse kit. If, however, you feel comfortable in your ability to understand and follow a schematic then constructing your own greenhouse can be a very rewarding experience. Building a house of your own can allow you to make small customizations that you otherwise would not be able to accomplish through the use of a kit.

Another important consideration is the type of crops you plan to keep in your mini greenhouse. Particularly for plants that require a certain amount of heat at night and during the winter, a non-heated greenhouse probably isn’t the best option. More advanced plant material will require a somewhat more sophisticated structure with active heating and ventilation (cooling). Lastly, you need to consider how much available space you have for your project. It’s important that you don’t put up your structure in an area that receives afternoon shade or one that doesn’t allow for sufficient cooling. You want to build or set up your greenhouse kit in an open environment that allows for maximum light penetration into the structure.

Building a new mini greenhouse can be a great way to grow beautiful and healthy plants, though it’s important to consider all of the potential issues beforehand. After evaluating your options, you will be well on your way to producing the plants that you’ve always wanted to produce.
