It is inevitable that sooner or later you will need to wash your king comforter, no matter how carefully you try to keep it clean. Unfortunately, due to the size of most king size comforters you are not usually able to fit them in a regular sized home washing machine. Of course, that does depend somewhat on the size of your washing machine and the thickness of the comforter, but in most cases even if you can squash the comforter into the machine it would not move around very freely inside the machine.
If your king down comforter is made from silk, or another delicate material, you really should have it laundered professionally at the dry cleaners. This is expensive but it is really the only choice you have if your king comforter set is made from those materials, as washing by hand is not really possible with something as heavy as a water logged king comforter would be. Naturally, you should not wash delicate materials in the washing machine either.
If the comforter is made from material that is fine to launder your best option is to take it to a Laundromat and wash it in one of the industrial sized washing machines they have. While there, you should also take advantage of the industrial dryers as well. If you do not thoroughly dry your comforter sets, king size or otherwise, they end up smelling very musty which is not pleasant when you have to sleep under them. Fortunately, while it is fairly expensive to operate the large size dryers you will find that your comforter dries very quickly, offsetting your costs a little.
One tip I recently read was to include a couple of tennis balls in the dryer with your comforter. Apparently as the dryer is spinning around the tennis balls bounce around inside and pound the filling so that when your comforter comes out of the dryer the filler is nice and flat instead of bunched up inside. I have not tried this tip yet, but I aim on doing so next time I launder my king comforter set as it definitely will not harm the comforter and there is a good chance that it may actually work. Until recently I have had to put safety pins through the comforter in the corners to make sure that the filler stayed in place during the washing and drying cycle.
