Deciding how to decorate a child’s room can be a lot of fun. Although the parents get to make all of the choices for a baby’s room, it’s nice to gradually let your child become more involved in the decorating process as they get older. Some kids will never really care too much about how their room looks (like some teenage boys I know) and other kids will get totally into the whole process of redoing their bedroom to their satisfaction.
The first step to selecting kids room decor is to come up with a color scheme, a theme or even just one focal point to start with. Suppose your pre-teen has just discovered surfing. You could start with the colors on their surf board or on a surf board wall decal and go from there. Or your daughter may have a pretty comforter that she loves with pink and purple hearts – the beginning of a theme.
If you don’t have the time or money to do over a room all at once, make it a work in progress. Get your child a few fun things for their room on their birthday or during the holidays. If the theme is based around an interest of the child, the room sometimes comes together on its own. If your son likes a few sports figures, for example, they often collect posters, jerseys and hats as time goes by.
Since your child’s tastes and interests may change every few years, it’s a good idea to keep the walls and furniture a neutral color and update the other room decor such as pillows and curtains as their preferences change. When you do update your kids room decor, don’t forget to take a few photos of your child in their “old room” since it is a lot of fun to look back and remember these things when everyone is grown up.
