Proper upkeep of a humidifier is crucial and replacing the humidifier filter will keep the resulting moist air clean and fresh. This is actually a very simple procedure and in most models will be very straight forward. The little piece of discretion we offer is that you should always take the instructions from the manufacturer over the generic explanation to follow as it might not pertain to your particular model. That said taking apart your unit to install the replacement humidifier filter is a great opportunity to also perform some basic cleaning. Also remember that disassembling beyond what is required to change the filter will usually void most warranties.
To begin, remove the water tank and empty the sitting water. This is a good time to rinse the tank and disinfect it by adding a water and bleach mixture. Allow the bleach and water solution to sit for about 20 minutes. While it is sitting, remove the motor housing which is simply a large piece that encases most of the humidifier. This should expose the filter at which point we simply remove the old humidifier filter by pulling it up or out depending on how your model was designed.
This is the point where we should remind you not to take apart your unit any further. If there is a mechanical problem that requires you to go further into the device, consult an expert which should be included as part of your manufacturer warranty. This is also a good point to stop and do some basic cleaning around the base of your unit. Wipe any reachable surfaces and then rinse with the same bleach-water solution from your water tank to disinfect the base of your unit.
Some filters are reusable while others are disposable. Filters are so economical however that it is a good idea to simply buy replacements. This ensures that they are completely clean. If you insist on reusing your filter first make sure it is the reusable type. Then wash it and be sure not to wring it or squeeze it in an attempt to dry it or it might rip. The humidifier filter can be replaced while it is still wet or you can sit it out to dry. Putting everything back together should be straightforward after you make sure that the filter is on properly and snug.
