Bed Sheets & Duvets: Does Thread Count Really Matter that Much?

If you haven’t shopped for sheets or a duvet cover for a while, you’ll be shocked at the prices. A high thread count set of queen sheets is anywhere from one hundred dollars to five hundred dollars and even a lowest thread count set of sheets will run you about forty dollars. So, the question is, does thread count really matter that much? Do you really need to spend a hundred bucks on sheets?

Here are a few things to consider.

If you at the store picking out sheets, make sure to feel them and open the zipper a little bit to take a look. If you can see the fibers criss crossing, those are some low quality and rough feeling sheets. If the thread count is under 400, this is probably what you’ll see. If it’s over 400, go by feel and what they’re made of. The best sheets and duvets are made of egyptian cotton or supima cotton. Both are superior quality and will feel very soft even if the thread count is lower than an inferior cotton. They’re made of high quality cottons from egypt (egyptian) or the US (supima). The one thing you want to check is the amount of these high quality cottons, because if it’s only a small percentage your sheets won’t feel any better than the low quality ones. Anything that is 100% supima will feel nice and be high quality. The same isn’t true for egyptian cotton. If you find egyptian cotton, make sure they feel really soft. Anything out of egypt can be called “egyptian”, but it doesn’t need to be of the high quality variety. The high quality sheets will get softer and more comfortable with each washing and the low quality ones will start to show wear and tear right away. You’ll see thread counts right up to on thousand. Those thousand thread count sheets will feel heavier and more like a thin blanket.

If you’re looking for high quality, high thread count sheets at a lower cost, try the discount home stores like Home Goods. They have some great deals on sheets and duvets that you’d pay hundreds for in a department store.
