One of the more eco-friendly aspects of interior design that is gaining momentum is using sustainable materials in your interior design. With the recent studies and more people becoming more environmentally aware of problems associated with traditional materials in everything in your home, going green in the home is making more sense these days. But, can you save money while creating your perfect living space by using green interior design aspects?
One of the biggest aspects in the interior of your home is the paint you choose to add color to your rooms. Traditional paints contained high levels of volatile organic compounds, or VOC’s as part of what made the paint adhere and cover the walls so well. Recent modifications to paints has been able to reduce, or all together remove the VOC’s from the paint to produce a product that not only looks great, covers well, but is more environmentally and physically healthy for you.
The materials in items in your home, such as the flooring, cabinets, and furniture have also been trending toward eco-awareness. By using recycled materials and natural materials instead of synthetics, your home’s appearance can now have a more natural look about it. Many people are concerned that the cost of these materials outweigh the benefits, however you can often find the materials to be used in local scrap yards, yard sales and even antique stores that are more durable and “natural” than more modern counterparts of the same item.
For example, many products today are mass produced in a factory of cheaply made press board. Before you buy a “new” entertainment unit or bookcase, you can often find an antique of similar style and size for about the same price. The older products are well made and have lasted for years. Part of the appeal of using recycled or reclaimed materials is the “age” the item often has to it.
Going green with your interior design doesn’t mean that you have to spend lots of money replacing things. It just takes a few green interior design tips to get you started in the right direction to succeed in saving money and the environment.
