One accessory that every fireplace owner needs is a grate on which the logs rest within the firebox. There are many options to choose from when you need to buy fireplace grates but no matter what type you buy, they all pretty much work the same way.
A grate for a stone fireplace, or any type of fireplace for that matter, contains a series of slats upon a set of legs that hold logs in the fireplace. The slats keep the wood off of the bottom of the fireplace, creating a space where air can circulate to keep the fire burning. Some styles of grates have larger spaces between the grates than others but all are designed to hold the logs steady and most will allow the burning embers to drop to the floor. There are some styles of grates, however, that have grids that keep the embers from falling down.
The main materials used to construct the fireplace grates are cast iron, steel bars, or stainless steel. All of these materials are fireproof and can withstand the intense temperatures created by a fire without melting or being destroyed. They are all strong and durable and are made to last a long time. Some grates are stronger and more durable than others and some even come with a lifetime guarantee.
When choosing a grate to use in your fireplace, one of the most important factors to consider is the size of the grate. The size should fit in the firebox without touching the walls and should be large enough to fit a few logs. Some grates have higher sides than others so if you really stack your wood up to make a roaring fire, you are probably best off purchasing a grate with higher sides.
No matter what type of grate you buy, your main considerations will be based on the type of material it is made of and the size. The aesthetics of the grate don’t really matter since they will only be used to hold logs in a burning fireplace.
