Steel doors are fitted into all sorts of buildings nowadays. It used to be that these doors were only installed in commercial or business premises because they required higher levels of security. With burglaries happening almost everywhere, especially in homes, people now want to upgrade their security at home and they see steel doors as the answer. The fact is that wooden and PVC doors are not strong enough. Sure there are measures that can be applied to a wooden door to improve its strength against an attacker, but it is not practical to apply such measures to a PVC door.
Exterior steel doors are offered in all sorts of styles these days. The plain flat painted steel door typically used in commercial buildings are still available but would not really be suitable for the home. Manufacturers are making steel reinforced doors that are faced with wood veneer in numerous styles that are more suited to the domestic environment.
The construction of a exterior steel doors comprise of a steel inner frame covered with steel sheet. The steel cover can be welded in place or have folded joints. There are various materials used to fill the core of the door depending on the security grading of the door. Higher grade doors may have a solid wood core for extra strength. Other grades may have lightweight, honeycomb materials or mineral wood filling. The steel used in the construction is hot dipped galvanised to prevent the door from corroding.
Although security is the main use, steel doors are used in other applications such internal fire doors. Fire doors are usually made from wood up to one hour fire resistance. There may be a requirement for a four hour door application to be installed in a boiler room, for example. A timber door would not provide the required protection and usually a steel door is the answer.
