Advantages of Decomposed Granite

Making a driveway can be an expensive undertaking depending on what type of materials you use. The most popular compounds are asphalt, gravel, and concrete, these three materials make up most driveways and can be seen on hundreds of properties. Some newer driveways also use stamped concrete or pavers instead. However, although these kinds of driveways are durable and look good, they are extremely expensive making them unaffordable for many homeowners.

You can still find a strong and good looking driveway for a reasonable price, and that is by using decomposed granite. Although it is not dirt cheap, decomposed granite cost is much lower compared to most other strong paving compounds. In addition to driveways, they can also be used for making walking paths, patios, and many other ground surfaces. It is created by crushing granite into tiny pieces and mixing them together with concrete and limestone. Some of them have color by adding traces of various minerals; the variety of colors can range from deep red to gold.

One of the advantages of decomposed granite is that it is easy to create. The substance is mixed and poured like concrete and then it can be formed into any desired shape. Afterwards, it becomes a very hard surface, will be able to withstand any weight, and will hold up well in any type of weather. Finishing the mixture is a little complicated so the labor cost may be slightly higher compared to normal concrete but overall it is still a much cheaper and long lasting option. You may even be able to do the job yourself if you do the proper research and have the right tools. Some of the things you will need are a wheelbarrow, compactor, and a set of shovels. The materials can usually be bought at a hardware store or stone shop.
