Common Sewage Plumbing Problems

The average home is outfitted with dozens of pipes that carry water to various locations, though it’s the main pipes leading out of the home that are responsible for removing waste. These larger pipes are installed so that they slant slightly downward, assisting in the ejection of waste from your home, which includes toilet paper and gray water. The waste then moves through a network of sewer pipes that ultimately feeds a sewage treatment plant. Unfortunately for the home or business owner, there are a variety of issues that can happen before or during the time when waste water exits. A few of the most common occurrences are listed below:

•    It’s quite common for most home and business owners to plant shrubs and trees around their property to help beautify it. While this makes the property look great on the surface, a different scene can play out below ground as tree roots begin to surround irrigation and sewage pipes. Over time, larger roots can actually crack and make their way inside of sewer lines, preventing waste from exiting the property. Often times, the end result is a back up of waste water into the dwelling, which can cause a host of other issues.

•    Another common issue is the disposal of large items down sink drains and toilets. Items like diapers, towels and hygienic products can all create blockages. Once again, this prevents waste water from exiting and can subsequently lead to back up. If you’ve never experienced sewage back up, it can be quite gross and offensive, and can also cause property damage if not corrected quickly.

•    In order to prevent foul odors from entering through drainage pipes, sinks and toilets are fitted with p-traps that allow a small portion of water to remain in the line at all times. This water prevents sewage gases from seeping up the drain line and into our homes. A drain that does not contain a water plug can allow odors to permeate into the home, though fortunately, it’s quite easy to pour a gallon of fresh water down the drain to reinstate the plug.

While many common and minor plumbing problems can be resolved by the home or business owner, it’s often necessary to hire a professional plumber to assist with more complicated jobs.
