Repair A Leak In the Ceiling

You may not realize as soon as a water leak in the roof occurs but the fact that there’s ceiling water damage will pretty soon become apparent when the ceiling reveals a wet spot in some way or another. No matter where the leak has occurred the water will drip down until it pools at the lowest point possible and if that’s on the ceiling then there will certainly be a pot to mark the place.

If the ceiling is a drywall ceiling then the most common place that the wet spot is going to appear is in a seam between a couple of the ceiling’s panels. When it appears it looks like a wet patch that quickly discolors to a brown wet patch and if it is left too long it will progress to a moldy wet patch. The key is to take action as quickly as you can after noticing the water damage problem.

The first step that you should take is to get into the attic, if you possibly can, and try to locate the source of the leak. If you can’t turn off the water to stop the leak then you’ll have to put a bucket under it to catch the water while cleaning up the existing puddles. If it’s not possible to get into the space above the ceiling then you will have to place the bucket under the dripping ceiling and then pierce the ceiling with a nail to allow the standing water to drain away.

If a job such as repairing a roof leak or a leaky pipe is beyond your capabilities your next step is an easy one. Call a roof repair specialist or a plumber and get them to conduct the necessary repairs to ensure the leak is completely fixed.

You should then ensure that the ceiling dries completely before attempting to repair the water damage. You can do this be remove the damaged paint and drywall with a putty knife and then setting about with your drywall repair job. It will be necessary to complete the job with a stain sealer and a paint job.
